Evaluating candidate agents of selective pressure for cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is the most common lethal single-gene mutation in people of European descent, with a carrier frequency upwards of 2%. Based upon molecular research, resistances in the heterozygote to cholera and typhoid fever have been proposed to explain the persistence of the mutation. Using a population genetic model parameterized with historical demographic and epidemiological data, we show...

Evaluating Spirometric Trends in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

In this research, we applied both supervised and unsupervised machine learning methodologies to spirometric data from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). We developed an ensemble of neural networks to evaluate the severity of chronic CF within an individual, given the appropriate clinical input data, and a series of reference equations to describe the CF patient’s pulmonary function at differen...

Cystic fibrosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and selective decontamination.

We used an oral topical antibiotic preparation to try and prevent oropharyngeal carriage of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients with cystic fibrosis. Ten of 15 patients treated with a two week course of intravenous ceftazidime together with a 90 day course of an antibiotic containing gel continued to carry P aeruginosa in the oropharynx.

Prevalence of Cystic Fibrosis Trans-membrane Conductance Regulator Gene common mutations in children with cystic fibrosis in Isfahan, Iran

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal genetic disorder of Cystic Fibrosis Trans-membrane Conductance (CFTR) Regulator gene mutations. We aimed to investigate common mutations in CF patients and to assess its possible relationship with clinical presentations. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 36 CF patients who were referred to a tertiary ped...

Antibiotic Susceptibility of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Isolated from Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Abstract Background and Objective: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common bacteria colonized in CF patients. Growing resistance of this bacterium to antibiotics now a day is a challenge of controlling infection in CF patient. In this study colonization of CF patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antibiotic suscep...
